Long Distance Relationships in the 21st Century
The holidays have come and gone. The festive Christmas decorations have been taken down, and have replaced with Cupid cut-outs and red hearts. The air smells of love everywhere. Valentine’s Day, indeed, is just around the corner. By this time, couples have already made plans for a romantic getaway or an intimate dinner date. Those that have not, on the other hand, are already pulling some strings to get accommodated on last minute hotel-and-flight travel deals or a table-for-two at a fine dining restaurant on February 14th. Not everyone in the world, though, gets to be cozed up with their beau and celebrate the season of love together. Although most people cower to the idea of long distance relationships, there are those that are just very much committed to each other that they would actually go through it and do everything to make it work. There are many different factors in life that sends people away from where they really want to be. Some are faced with an opportunity they cannot refuse, an important family situation and lots of other things. However, there is only one reason why some couples would ride on the LDR train in an instant: love.
In the advent of technology, long distance relationships (or LDRs, as it is more commonly referred to this day and age) are becoming more and more common. Thankfully, the 21st century has more than just a handful of new ways that help couples to communicate. Somehow, these technological achievements made LDRs so much easier to endure than they were 10 years ago. Thanks to the computers, tablets and smartphones, gone are the days when couples have to go through the agony of not talking to their loved ones for days or getting a glimpse of their faces. Gone are the days when long distance phone calls that go beyond “I miss you” cost a person’s entire month’s salary. Today, there are a number of different ways to stay connected: email, instant messaging, texting and video chatting.
Technology is not the only industry that has dramatically advanced in this generation. The shipping industry has also revolutionized in terms of services. Many shipping companies have gotten more and more competitive – not only with each other, but also with the well-established professional overseas movers, tour operators and courier services or local postal offices. Shipping companies have gone far beyond commercial purposes and started offering services for individuals. For instance, some shipping companies now offer international moving services where they provide assistance to those that are relocating to a different country. Some have opened their cargo ships for travelers as an alternative to luxurious vacation cruises. Others have launched package shipping options, making gift-giving so much easier and more affordable for couples in LDRs.
Valentine’s is, perhaps, the busiest time of the year for shipping companies next to Christmas. It is the season when dozens and dozens of people send out packages containing gifts to be shipped to there loved ones wherever they are in the world. Individuals can have anything shipped: flowers, chocolates, jewelry and all the other niceties that say “I love you”, “I am thinking of you” and, of course, “I wish you were here”. Shipping companies only ask that the content and value of the packages must be declared, and give you the option on getting shipping insurance.
